Whether you want to get a work permit or need to apply for a driver’s license in Chiang Mai, a medical certificate, locally known as a health certificate, is needed in order to obtain either of them. Some insurance companies also list a medical certificate as one of the requirements when applying for insurance.

Fortunately, obtaining a medical certificate in Chiang Mai is not rocket science. The process is relatively low-priced and fast but the medical checkup itself is still thorough at the same time.

What is a medical certificate?

Generally speaking, a medical certificate is a written statement from a health care provider that serves as evidence of health. In addition to certifying someone’s state of health, the certificate also confirms whether the person is free of contagious or infectious disease or whether the person has other health issues.

Medical certificates are required in Chiang Mai, especially if you plan to work here as you will therefore be required to apply for a work permit. Whenever you are applying for, or renewing, your work permit you have to get an up to date new medical certificate.

Simultaneously, if you are already working for a company and at one point you are feeling unwell, a medical certificate is needed in order to provide proof to your supervisor so you can take sick leave. The medical certificate features how your conditions affect your work capacity.

You will also need a medical certificate when you are applying for a driver’s license or renewing one (i.e. eye examination). Similarly, medical certificates are required if you are interested in joining the Chiang Mai Flying Club. Some gyms or fitness centers, as well as other work or school-related excursions, might also require medical certificates.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many airlines require passengers to obtain a Fit to Fly Certificate for international flights in order to decrease the risk of further spreading COVID-19. Here at HUGSA Medical, we also provide a COVID-19 test that you may well require should you choose to fly abroad.

What is the process of getting a medical certificate?

After Lisa went to obtain her most recent medical certificate, she acknowledged that the process was excellent and professional. In fact, getting a medical certificate in Thailand is considerably stress-free and cheap, especially in comparison with other countries.

“The clinic where I got my medical certificate is very thorough. They took my blood and tested it for all requirements needed for the certificate,”

Lisa said.

When you are getting a medical certificate, your local health care provider will generally measure your weight and height. They will also check your blood pressure and conduct a general physical examination.

The doctor will also ask some questions in order to get a better picture of your health. A blood test might be required depending on what type of medical certificate that you need.

A medical certificate that is needed to obtain a work permit usually requires thorough blood tests to confirm that you do not have tuberculosis, third stage syphilis, among others. Sometimes a visual test is sufficient to certify that you do not have certain illnesses such as leprosy. Other illnesses that are investigated as per the medical certificate requirements include drug addiction and elephantiasis.
